Story Train Expands: Strengthening Early Literacy in Preschools

The Sagotåget (Story Train) is an initiative designed to support language development and reading comprehension among preschool children. The initiative is led by LasseMajas Stiftelse, the Bonniers Familjestiftelse and AcadeMedia.

At its core, Story Train equips educators with structured methods for read-aloud sessions and comprehension strategies. Rather than passively listening, children are encouraged to actively engage in conversations about stories—asking questions, reflecting, and exploring meaning together. This interactive approach nurtures curiosity and builds a deeper understanding of text, laying a strong foundation for future reading skills—long before children learn to read on their own.

Educators participating in the program receive continuous support through training sessions, digital resources, and opportunities to exchange experiences with peers from other preschools. Beyond its educational framework, the program also fosters a sense of community among preschools committed to strengthening early literacy.

Participating preschools become certified as “carriages” in the Story Train and receive curated book packages, inspirational materials, and access to collaborative learning. Each new preschool is welcomed with the phrase: “You are now carriage number 32 in the train!”—a symbolic invitation into a growing movement of young, curious readers.

Through this initiative, the partners aim to ensure that more children receive a stimulating start to their reading journey—helping to build the foundation for lifelong learning.
