Aqra Miegħi / Read With Me

Aqra Miegħi / Read With Me is an early literacy programme designed to introduce babies and toddlers to the joy of books, stories and songs from the very first years of life. The National Literacy Agency of Malta offers this programme to parents, grandparents and guardians free of charge and it takes place in most towns and villages across the Maltese Islands. The sessions are hosted in libraries, schools, local councils and public gardens, making them widely accessible to families. Many participants attend regularly, with some families choosing to join sessions in both Maltese and English every week. This approach supports bilingualism, enriches vocabulary and language skills, and nurtures a lifelong love of reading.

All weekly sessions, delivered by our various Reading Animators, follow a lively and engaging structure, designed to capture the attention of young children while encouraging interaction and bonding with their caregivers, as well as providing ideas as to what can be done at home. As children grow, they can continue their reading journey through Seħer l-Istejjer / The Magic of Stories, a follow-up programme designed for children aged 4 to 7 years. These sessions, also held in both formal schooling and community settings, provide age-appropriate storytelling and literacy activities, ensuring that the joy of books grows with every stage of childhood.
