Book of the Year Election

The annual “Book of the Year” competition has taken place since 2005. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage Lithuanian writers to create, and publishers to publish, quality literature for people of various ages, to encourage citizens of various ages and social groups to read, to ensure the creation of an environment conducive to reading and to improve the accessibility of artistically valuable literature.

During the campaign, the readers select the books proposed by the expert commission from these categories: children, adolescent, prose, poetry and non-fiction literature.

The nominees are announced at Vilnius Book Fair, the results of the campaign are published, and the authors are awarded on 7 May, on the day of Recovery of the Press, Language and Books.

Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania organises the campaign. Partner of the campaign – Lithuanian Publishers Association.

The campaign “Book of the Year Election” is a part of the Reading Encouragement Program, which is financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
