Fathers Read to Children

The campaign, which has been organised by the Children and Youth Literature Department of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania since 2019, is not only meant to encourage fathers to read to children for the sake of education, a topic which is often discussed among child education specialists (as even for the smallest children, it is very important to read because reading is not only a method of communication, but also a tool to teach children language, to gain an appreciation of books and to get to know the world), but also to inspire and encourage fathers to spend time with their children in a meaningful manner, to discover the joys of reading a book together, and to alert society to the importance of reading with a child. Through the project we intend to spread the news about the benefit of fathers reading with their children to the child’s development, to the psychological wellbeing of fathers and development of their relationship.

All of the country’s libraries are invited to participate in this campaign every year. During the campaign, the fathers acting in the field of culture, sports, business and various other fields read to the children.

The campaign “Fathers Read to Children” is one of the tools of the Reading Encouragement Program, the implementation of which is financed by the Ministry of Culture.
