Nati per Leggere Trieste, Italia

Nati per Leggere – NpL (Born to Read) is the Italian program which promotes shared reading to children from 0 to 6 years. It was funded in 1999 by the associations of librarians (Associazione Italiana Biblioteche – AIB) and paediatricians (Associazione Culturale Pediatri – ACP) and by a child-focused NGO (Centro per la Salute del Bambino – CSB).

The program is developed at local level by a grass-root network of local stakeholders: librarians, paediatricians and other health care professionals, politicians, educators, school teachers, non-profit organizations and volunteers. At present, the program reaches up to 85.000 new children per year (almost 1 out of 4 new born children).

“Shared reading since the first months of life is a beautiful thing to do together, and produces important benefits for the child’s cognitive and emotional development and for caregivers’ sensitivity and responsiveness.”
