Language use in the curriculum with an emphasis on bilingual education in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

The report outlines the methods adopted, results and implications from two complementary studies on the use of language in Mathematics lessons in Malta. The aim of Study 1 was to investigate the way teachers used Maltese and/or English during Mathematics lessons with students aged 8-9 years (n=221).  In Study 2 we analyzed academic performance of these students in a dual-language and a monolingual examination paper.
