Books and movement – a winning combination for the second year in a row

On 6 June 2025, EURead member Foreningen !les celebrates the second annual Sports Reading Day (“Idrettens lesedag”) – a national initiative that combines books and physical activity to promote reading among children and young people across Norway.

This year’s campaign features seven elite athletes as reading role models. In a dedicated video, they share how reading supports their mental focus, discipline, and personal development – qualities that benefit them both in sports and in life.

The athletes featured this year include:

  • Felix Baldauf (wrestling)
  • Eirin Maria Kvandal (ski jumping)
  • Magnus Søndenå (handball)
  • Othelie Høie (wrestling)
  • Halvor Egner Granerud (ski jumping)
  • Per-Anders Kure (wrestling)

To support schools, Foreningen !les provides free and flexible resources: reading trails, classroom discussion guides, activity ideas, and an audio-based movement session led by former handball player Bjarte Myrholt. Activities are tailored to different age groups – lower primary, upper primary, and secondary – and encourage students to explore reading through movement, reflection, and conversation.

Sports Reading Day shows how literacy promotion can extend beyond traditional classroom settings. By linking reading with physical activity and real-life role models, Foreningen !les continues to find innovative ways to make reading relevant, accessible, and inspiring for all learners.
