The Slovenian Book Agency (Javna agencija za knjigo RS) carries out professional, developmental, and executive tasks related to the implementation of strategic documents and directives in the book sector. It also carries out activities that support the development of the book industry and other legally mandated tasks in the public interest. Its mission is to create lasting conditions for the growth of the book sector and to ensure professional and independent decision-making on the selection of programs and projects financed from the national budget.

In accordance with the Slovenian Book Agency Act, the field of books includes:

• providing the conditions for the publication of books and magazines in the fields of literature and the humanities and for the work of authors in the fields of literature and the humanities, 
• translations of Slovenian authors into foreign languages, 
• international cooperation in the field of books, 
• literary festivals and events, 
• the development of the bookshop network, 
• the development of reading culture, 
• the promotion of books, authors and reading, 
• the coordination of all the links in the book chain, 
• additional professional training in the field of books, 
• the public lending right, and 
• digitalization in the field of books.

Reading culture

In the field of reading promotion, the Slovenian Book Agency works to:

• develop reading habits across diverse target groups, 
• foster lifelong engagement with books, 
• ensure access to high-quality literary events, and 
• encourage book purchasing. 

These objectives are pursued through national reading promotion campaigns, co-financing and co-organising literary events, and supporting programs and projects that nurture reading culture across different demographics.
