Kitabistan

Baku, Azerbaijan

Kitabistan is our imaginary country. In English, it means “Book country”. We consider every reader of this imaginary country to be Kitabistan’s citizens. Composed of an enlightener team, Kitabistan strives for values considered important for humanity such as democracy, human rights, the rule of law, gender equality, science and innovation. Our work is based on the principles of openness, transparency and trustworthiness. Thus, books that promote violence and aggression, discriminate against people based on their religion, nationality, race, language, or gender, and fail to serve humanity are prohibited in this imaginary country. Our primary aim is to spread peace, reconciliation, dialogue, and consensus among people and to build an intercultural bridge. We also seek to present the economic, social, educational, political, and other experiences of different countries to the country we live in, and also to the close linguistic groups that include about 100 million people.

In today’s world, propaganda has become a major issue that often leads people to be misinformed. At Kitabistan, we strive to provide individuals with access to alternative opinions and positive experiences from around the world. Our efforts extend beyond translating and printing books. We produce short documentary films, host Talk conferences featuring academics from various countries, and work to bridge the gap in access to books between urban and rural areas. We visit remote regions, encourage young people and teenagers to read books, donate books to libraries and schools and help establish new libraries in those areas.

Our mission is to create a more inclusive and open society. We achieve this also by organizing book discussions on important and relevant topics including democracy, human rights, and gender equality. We partner with local and international institutions to bring about positive change and progress.
