
The National Literacy Agency, within the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, was established by Legal Notice 192/2014 with the remit of carrying out functions related to promoting and ensuring the delivery of the different aspects of the National Literacy Strategy for All in Malta and Gozo. The Agency seeks to promote and sustain lifelong and lifewide, high quality, literacy practices. It strives also to improve literacy outcomes, resulting in inclusive practices, higher educational qualifications, and better job prospects. To do this, the Agency:
- designs and delivers programmes that promote literacy skills and practices such as the Footballer’s Read and Write Programme, the Reading Ambassadors Programme and the Reading for Pleasure Programmes;
- supports children with literacy difficulties through the Klabb Naħla After School Literacy Programme, the Nwar Family Literacy Programme and the Reading Recovery Programme;
- supports the production and publication of literacy resources through the Bil-Ħila Tagħkom Scheme and the Bis-Sehem Tagħkom Scheme;
- provides access to and distributes literacy resources through the Aqra Kemm Tiflaħ/Enriching Classroom Libraries Programme, the Aqra d-Dar/Read at Home Programme and L-Għodda f’Idejk Scheme.
- has specialised units to support school libraries and to assist the development of literacy and language related policies i.e. the Literacy and Information Support Unit (LISU) and the Language in Education Policy Unit.
